INDYCAR: KV Racing Close To Two-Car Program

After facing hard and humbling times shortly after the Fontana IZOD IndyCar Series season finale when two of its three entries were dismantled, KV Racing is close to announcing the addition of a second program for 2013.

The Kevin Kalkhoven- and Jimmy Vasser-owned team raced through the 2012 season with Tony Kanaan, Rubens Barrichello and E.J. Viso piloting its fleet of Chevy-powered cars, but with Barrichello expected to join Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports next year and Viso getting closer to forming his own team, possibly with Bryan Herta Autosport, KV Racing released the crew members from Viso's No. 5 program and Barrichello's No. 8 car.

“Right now we’ve tried to put all of our efforts behind Tony and put all the wood behind one arrow, so to speak,” Vasser told SPEED.com in late September. “Then, whatever business decisions are made after that, we’ll see what they are.”

Veteran managers Mark Johnson and Tom Wurz also departed KV, leaving Kanaan’s No. 11 entry its sole focus in the off-season, but talks with two single-car teams, Ed Carpenter Racing and HVM Racing, were held in September as KV looked to field a blended, multi-car program that came with a driver, crew and sponsors.

Carpenter, who won the race at Fontana, saw talks between his stepfather/co-owner Tony George and Kalkhoven break down, leaving HVM as the most likely candidate to go forward with HVM in 2013, but as Vasser told SPEED.com on Friday, KV is close to announcing a second program that has all of the elements it was looking for, but without the involvement of another team.

"There's no KV, HVM merger whatsoever,” he said. “I can tell you that two cars is what’s likely to happen. I can’t say who it is, but you’ll see on Monday when we run two cars on the track at Barber.”
