Some thoughts, predictions and squeals from an old school dropout who remembers Trenton but can’t name the state capitol of New Jersey:

*** Sunday’s caution-free show at Edmonton was the essence of racing: 98 minutes of gassing it with no interruptions. “Damn that’s the way racing should be,’’ exclaimed Will Power after charging from 17th to third. “As hard and as fast as you can go with no yellows. I loved it.’’

*** I quit cheering for drivers (openly) when Jim Hurtubise retired but it’s hard not to pull for Mr. Sato. He’s a gracious little throttle psycho who is always classy regardless of the circumstances, whether it’s the disappointment of going for it and crashing at Indy last May or his fine effort last Sunday trying to chase down Helio Castroneves. If he stays cool like Bobby Rahal has been preaching (and like he drove Sunday), Takuma is going to soon be able to say: “Job done.’’

*** Edmonton has a year left on its contract with IndyCar and promoter Octane is also the group looking to bring another race to Canada in 2013, which fits in well with Randy Bernard’s desire to expand to 19 races.

*** The 10-spot grid penalty for un-authorized engine changes is the worst idea since the 25/8 qualifying rule at Indianapolis. It screws the drivers and teams for something they have no control over, it confuses the fans and it stinks. If Ryan Hunter-Reay starts from what he earned last weekend, it changes everything.

*** Castroneves claimed he wasn’t thinking about his road rage from 2010 during his victory lap. “Not at all,’’ grinned the three-time Indy 500 winner who accosted IndyCar peacekeeper Charles Burns during a 10-minute meltdown after his win was disallowed on a blocking call. “I stopped to climb the fence and then I drove into victory lane and tried to find Charles to shake his hand.’’

*** Scott Dixon has a gorgeous wife, two cute kids and a Target truck of bad luck this year.

*** Andretti Autosport vs. Team Penske for the championship. Three drivers who have never won a title separated by 26 points with four races remaining. An American, a Brazilian and an Aussie. Two road courses, a street circuit and an oval. Does RHR become the first Yankee champ in a unified series since Al Unser Jr. in 1994? Does Helio finally seal the deal or is Willy Boy going to pull it out as the hunter instead of the hunted?

*** A.J. Foyt said if A.J. Allmendinger no longer had a home in NASCAR that he would be interested in talking to the former Champ Car winner and Formula Atlantic champion about returning to open wheel.

*** Understand Michigan, Pocono and Kentucky are all still talking about an IndyCar race in 2013 and Texas is looking like it will return so there could be as many as eight ovals on the schedule.
