INDYCAR: Nashville Says ICS Will Not Return in ’09

Nashville Superspeedway confirmed Monday that the Indy Racing League will not return to the 1.33-mile oval in 2009. The track says that efforts to negotiate a new contract for the event, which has been a part of the IRL calendar for eight years, were unsuccessful.

“We’re disappointed for all of the fans and sponsors of open-wheel racing in middle Tennessee,” said Cliff Hawks, Vice President and General Manager of Nashville Superspeedway. “Regrettably, the IRL has chosen to structure their
sanction fees at such a level that we had no choice but to re-evaluate whether they fit into our plan.

“Regardless, we believe the IRL had no further interest in the middle Tennessee market. We are very grateful to Firestone and their support of the Firestone Indy 200 for the past seven years,” Hawks added.

Nashville’s place on the IndyCar Series schedule is tipped to be taken by a renewed Toronto Grand Prix, a longtime bastion of CART and the Champ Car World Series.
