Facing a 10-position penalty in qualifying after being forced to make an unapproved engine change Friday night, Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports' Simon Pagenaud is doing everything he can to minimize the damage.

With qualifying up next, the Frenchman showed he has every intention of starting as far up the grid as possible to mitigate the penalty that's awaiting him.

Pagenaud pushed the Honda-powered No. 77 to a lap of 1:01.89, just under Will Power's 2011 pole time of 1:01.96.

Will Power followed his former Team Australia Champ Car teammate in second with his Chevrolet-powered Team Penske entry, and also bettered his pole lap with a 1:01.93-second trip around the 1.8-mile, 14-turn circuit.

Ryan Briscoe was just 0.0033 seconds behind his Penske stablemate with a 1:01.94, while Honda runners Dario Franchitti went fourth with a 1:02.00 in his Ganassi car and A.J. Foyt's Mike Conway completed the top 5 with a 1:02.01-second lap.

Surprises during the session came from the only true rookie in the field, Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing's Josef Newgarden, who rocketed to eighth, and four-time champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais, who held seventh in his No. 7 Lotus-powered car for much of the session before being pushed back to 16th as many drivers made faster simulated qualifying runs.

Bourdais' lap of 1:02.36 was just 0.5845 seconds off Pagenaud's session-leading time, which must be encouraging for the other Lotus entries.

Still playing catch-up from Friday, KV Racing's Rubens Barrichello ended the one-hour practice in 20th.

The only stoppages during the session came when Conway came to a halt on the track, and later when Power lightly nosed into the Turn 10 tire barrier.
