INDYCAR: Penske And Pennzoil In 2011?
The 1980s retro theme appears to continue for Roger Penske, with rumors of Pennzoil and Shell signing on to sponsor Helio Castroneves in 2011.

Two weeks ago it was Roger Penske, Ilmor and Chevrolet inking a deal to reunite the trio after they first partnered in 1985, and according to SPEED.com’s open-wheel sources, the throwback colors of that 1985 Team Penske IndyCar could also make a return as early as 2011.

Pennzoil, primary sponsor of the cars Rick Mears drove to victory for Penske at the 1984 and 1988 Indianapolis 500s, is supposedly set to serve as the primary sponsor for Helio Castroneves’ No. 3 Team Penske entry next year.

Pennzoil’s parent company, Shell Oil, is expected to take over the branding Castroneves’ car next May as the Brazilian attempts to earn his fourth Indy 500 victory.

Reached Wednesday by SPEED.com, a Team Penske representative declined to comment on the topic.

Shell Oil announced their departure from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup team in April, moving to become the primary sponsor of Kurt Busch’s Penske Racing effort in 2011 and joining Team Penske as an associate sponsor on all three of its IndyCar entries.

Speculation regarding Shell/Pennzoil increasing their role with one of Team Penske’s entries has been increasing over the last few weeks, and with Verizon returning to sponsor 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series runner-up Will Power, the choice of three-time Indy 500 winner Castroneves seems to be a smart marketing choice by the oil giant.

After the withdrawal of Phillip Morris as Penske’s primary backer in IndyCar at the conclusion of the 2009 season, Penske funded the cars of Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe on his own last season. While the status of a new sponsor for Briscoe remains unclear, a camera phone picture of Castroneves dressed in a Shell-liveried suit appears to confirm an elevated arrangement between Penske and the motor oil company.

Pennzoil joined Team Penske’s CART Indy car program in 1983, winning the two aforementioned Indy 500s and the 1985 championship with Al Unser Sr. driving a Pennzoil- and Hertz-branded March-Cosworth.

Pennzoil’s last season with Penske’s Indy car operation came in 1990, where Rick Mears won the opening round at Phoenix and went on to finish third in the championship. Pennzoil left to sponsor Jim Hall’s new team for 1991 as Phillip Morris assumed full sponsorship of Penske’s CART, IRL and IndyCar Series entries for nearly 20 years.
