Team Penske’s Will Power made the best of the 91-degree heat and humidity at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course today to post the fastest time of the 90-minute session in his Chevy-powered Dallara DW12.

The Aussie’s 1:06.8-second lap around the 2.2-mile facility topped Scott Dixon’s 1:07.0-second tour in his Honda-powered Target Chip Ganassi Racing entry.

With a variety of different rubber put down by sports car series prior to the start of the 2 p.m. session, Power said that dealing with changing surface conditions contributed to lap times that were almost a half-second slower than teams ran during last week's test session at mid-Ohio.

“The track just gets better here every lap,” he said. “It has a really weird coat on the top of it and it takes more grip and grip and grips up. Then another series goes out there and it goes backwards. That’s how it is, and it makes it bloody hard to drive—it makes for an interesting qualifying.”

Dixon’s did his usual dance, holding his No. 9 car at odd angles on the way to his fastest lap, but the most impressive performance of the afternoon came from Andretti Autosport’s Marco Andretti.

The third-generation driver is routinely panned for his struggles on road and street courses, but shadowed Dixon, running just .041 seconds slower than the Kiwi.

“We were good at the test (at Mid-Ohio), and that carried over to today,” he said. “We didn't even run our last set of tires, so that proves right there how quick the RC Cola car was today. We were one change away from going much quicker than that."

Schmidt Hamilton Motorsport’s Simon Pagenaud put on a lesson in smoothness on the way to a 1:07.1-second lap, which was good enough for fourth, and coming off a fourth-place finish at Edmonton, Graham Rahal maintained his momentum, ending Friday in fifth.

“It was a good day for us,” said Rahal, IndyCar’s newest free agent. “I’m proud of the guys and they’re working really hard. The ultimate goal is to come here and to win, so we’re off to a good start. We’ve got a really good car and I’m not sure we got a hundred percent out of it yet. Certainly, we’re really happy with the NTB/Service Central car and we’ll just keep working away.”
