Rubens Barrichello made it clear last weekend at Mid-Ohio that he definitely wants to come back to the IZOD IndyCar series and was seriously shopping for the best ride available in 2013.

Jimmy Vasser hopes that it continues to be KV Racing Technology but it appears a bit of a bidding war could be brewing among Honda-powered teams.

“We’ve got an investment in Rubens, we want to keep him and we’ve got people in Brazil right now trying to sell sponsorships,” said Vasser, who co-owns KV Racing with Kevin Kalkhoven.

“He’s free to do what he wants but I’d like to get some clarity because I keep hearing all these stories about where he might be going.”

The most experienced driver in Formula One history has been driving a Chevrolet for KV Racing this season but spent four years in F1 with Honda power and met with several of their IndyCar teams last weekend.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports and Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan Racing are thought to be the front-runners for Barrichello’s services with the fourth seat in Chip Ganassi’s team also a possibility.

Schmidt’s one-car effort with Simon Pagenaud and engineer Ben Bretzman are the over-achievers of the 2012 season as they stand sixth in the point standings after 12 races.

“You would have to ask Rubens if he’s interested in our team,” replied Rob Edwards, team manager for Schmidt’s operation, when asked if they had approached the 40-year-old veteran about joining Pagenaud next year.

“We definitely want to run a second car and Sam and I have a list of drivers we’re interested in and we’re going through it.”

Bobby Rahal’s return to full-time status hasn’t had the results of Schmidt but his team has given Takuma Sato a competitive car almost every time out.
