TOLD YOU SO
Last night Helio Castroneves was in an abnormally ebulient mood, even for a man whose mood swings tend to run the gamut from delighted to ecstatic.

“The car is really good, man,” he said. “We haven’t run so much on new tires and we’re still pretty fast. And the car is bottoming through Turn One. So if we can get Turn One better . . . oh man, watch out.”

Well, Castroneves and the Team Penske crew got Turn One figured out, and the result was his second pole in as many tries here in an Indy car.

“I had the same problems this morning in practice,” he said. “The temperatures were a little cooler (than yesterday) and we still didn’t have it fuly sorted-out. I was not happy with the car in the first qualifying session (when his best time was a 1:07.8723), but then we realized what we had to do with the car, (and) in the last two segments I was really able to go for it.”

Indeed. Castroneves knocked half a second off his first segment time in the second qualifying session, then went a tenth better in the final (1:07.2480) to grab the pole.

NOT KEEPING PACE
Scott Dixon has been at or near the top of
the time sheets all weekend, but when the chips were down today in the final qualifying he was unable to make the most of his inclusion in the top six qualifying segment. Having turned a 1:07.3751 to make it into the top six segment, he was unable to better 1:07.5930 and so will start sixth tomorrow.

“We didn’t make the right changes for the final segment,” said Dixon. “I knew we had too much understeer from the moment I got up to speed, but by the time we pitted to dial-in some more front wing the tires had five or six laps on them and we had pretty much lost our chance for a quick time.”

RAHAL’S TRIBUTE

Graham Rahal will unveil a new helmet design in tomorrow’s Indy Car race at Mid-Ohio, one celebrating the career of Newman/Haas/Lanigan team co-owner Paul Newman. Rahal’s helmet features miniaturized posters from some of Newman’s most celebrated movies -- including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “The Hustler,” “Slap Shot” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Following the race Rahal will auction off the helmet on e-Bay, with the procedes going to Newman’s Hole in the Wall Camps.
