Group Lotus got its feet wet during the 2010 IndyCar season by sponsoring KV Racing. But the British sports car manufacturer is jumping into the deep end in 2012.

SPEED has learned that Group Lotus will not only design and build its own aero package for 2012 but it will also supply an engine, most likely built by Cosworth.

A week after General Motors announced it would be returning to IndyCar competition when the new rules are unveiled in 2012, Group Lotus has now joined Honda and Chevrolet to give the series three sources of power.

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard supposedly received a last-minute commitment from Group Lotus on Tuesday night just before the deadline but he could not be reached for comment.

It’s believed Bernard is flying to Los Angeles, where the Lotus announcement will be made at the LA Auto Show.

“If it’s true it would be great news for IndyCar racing but this is the first I’ve heard of it,” said Jimmy Vasser, the 1996 CART champion who co-owns KV Racing with Kevin Kalkhoven.

As I said the other day, the main thing KV Racing is focused on now is finalizing a long-term deal with Lotus.”

Gerry Forsythe and Kalkhoven own Cosworth, which built F1 engines for Williams, Lotus, Virgin and HRT.

But Group Lotus—owned by Malaysia’s state-run Proton car company—and the Lotus F1 team have no affiliation and the former is contemplating a new association in F1 with Renault.

Group Lotus sponsored Takuma Sato this past season in IndyCar and plans to unveil its new line of sports cars in LA on Thursday as well.
