With INDYCAR suspending its 10-spot grid penalties for the Indy 500, two drivers will start no better than 11th for this Sunday's Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

The series announced that any engine change penalties coming out of the Brazil round held on April 29th, and any subsequent unapproved changes during the month of May would be carried over to Round 6 at Detroit, leaving Ganassi Racing and HVM Racing with an extra hurdle to overcome during the 90-lap race.

Ganassi's Graham Rahal, who suffered an engine failure during Indy practice on May 14th and required a replacement to use before installing the uprated single-turbo Honda V6 for Carb Day and the race, will face a 10-spot penalty in the No. 38 Service Central car.

(INDYCAR allowed teams to install fresh engines for Carb Day and the race without penalty, with those engines being used this weekend in Detroit onward.)

Rahal's average qualifying positions through four road and street course races has been eighth, likely leaving him starting in the high teens on the 14-turn, 2.1-mile Belle Isle circuit.

HVM's Simona de Silvestro, piloting the only Lotus-powered entry left in the series, was forced to change engines on May 17th and will likely start last on the 25-car grid.

Despite being down on power, de Silvestro has been impressive in qualifying during the first four rounds, starting 17th once and 21st on three occasions for an average of 20th on those 26-car grids.

INDYCAR also informed SPEED.com a third driver could be assessed the 10-spot penalty for Detroit, but those details are still pending.
