Al Unser Jr's battle with alcohol abuse reared its head again late last month, but the two-time Indy 500 winner tells SPEED.com he's working himself back towards stability and sobriety.

"You know, considering the circumstances I'm under, things are going a lot better, but it's still one day at a time," he said. "So I'm back on my program and that sort of thing and we're going to do the best we can and get over this speedbump that's in my life."

If all goes well, Unser Jr's hopes to return to the life he's known for four decades.

"I'm working to get everything back in control and continue down the road and hopefully we’ll be at the races sometime next year doing something," he continued. "The racetrack is my life. And so hopefully we can learn from this and definitely not let it happen again and get back to being involved in racing."

Unser Jr. also says the support he's received from fans and from the IndyCar paddock has been a great help so far.

"It has definitely been appreciated," he said. "The fans, the drivers, the teams, the support they’ve definitely given me, it's been overwhelming. And I truly look forward to getting through this rough patch and get back to where I was before."
