Helio Castronves has firsthand knowledge that campers at Watkins Glen International are a resourceful bunch... (LAT photo) ยป More Photos

Helio Castroneves knows the universal hand gesture for screwdriver. So, apparently, do the fans at Watkins Glen International.

The sudden on-track breakdown of the No. 3 Team Penske Honda/Dallara led to the unusual scene of Castroneves getting out of his car, walking to the nearest fence and gesturing for a screwdriver by twisting his right hand. One fan went to his camper and emerged with a screwdriver, but Castroneves couldn’t get the engine cover off the car.

“I asked them for a screwdriver, but I had my helmet on,” Castroneves said. “So I was like, ‘Screwdriver.’ (Makes twisting motion with hands.) That’s the universal sign for screwdriver. I could have used other ones, but I didn’t.”

The problem was a broken throttle cable, and his stall will force Castroneves to start last in the 26-car field when Sunday’s race begins. His teammate, Ryan Briscoe, won the pole position for Sunday’s Camping World Indy Grand
Prix at The Glen.

Castroneves said he was thankful for the fans who helped. And yes, he returned the screwdriver to its rightful owner.

“Actually they were quite helpful,” he said. “They were trying. I was like, ‘Come on, let’s go.’ It reminded me of those longer ALMS races where you have to fix it yourself. I’m a good driver, but I’m not a good mechanic. I couldn’t even get the engine cover off.”

Antinucci, Matos go 1-2 in Lights twin bill -- Richard Antinucci and Raphael Matos won Indy Lights races Saturday during a rare doubleheader at Watkins Glen.

After finishing second in the first race, Antinucci, a nephew of Eddie Cheever Jr., passed Ana Beatriz and held off a charge by Matos.

“”It’s difficult to race twice in one day,” Antinucci said. “You can’t spray champagne after the first race or your suit will stink for the second race.”
