Alex Zanardi, one of the most inspirational figures in the world of motor racing, has triumphed at the Paralympics, earning gold in Road Cycling at the historic Brands Hatch road course in England.

In typical Zanardi fashion, the 45-year-old Italian crossed the finish line for the 16-kilometer Men's Individual H 4 Time Trial race in dominating fashion, breaking the timing beam a full 27.14 seconds ahead of Germany's Nobert Mosandl.

American Paralympian Oscar Sanchez earned the bronze.

"It's an amazing feeling," Zanardi told the Associated Press. "I'm really, really happy for the result."

Zanardi, who lost both legs in a horrific accident at the Lausitzring Champ Car race in 2001, was saluted by Indy car driver Tony Kanaan, his Mo Nunn Racing teammate that fateful day 11 years ago.

"Knowing the guy the way I do, and being his friend and being present for everything that happened to him [at the Lausitzring], I'm not surprised," the 2004 IndyCar Series champion told SPEED.com.

"It is an amazing accomplishment. He wouldn't be competing if he knew he couldn't win, so that margin of victory is typical Alex."

Zanardi is also pursuing gold medals in two additional contests, the Men's Individual H 4 Road Race and the Mixed H 1-4 Team Relay.

Zanardi won the 1997 and 1998 CART Indy Car championships driving for powerhouse team owner Chip Ganassi, who was speechless when he learned of his former driver's achievement.

"That might eclipse all he's done," he said. "It continues the winning legacy of that guy on and off the track. He beat a Marine! Nothing surprises me about that guy. He's a great athlete, a gem of a person and an amazing ambassador for our sport."
