With the launch of the FIA World Endurance Championship and established Le Mans-branded series in both North America and Europe, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest is strengthening its efforts for a re-launch of the Asian Le Mans Series.

The ACO announced Wednesday that Remy Brouard will head up development of its activities on a worldwide basis, with a focus towards the the Asian region. Brouard was previously the club’s general manager, a position he held since 2008.

“The ACO, which is already firmly implanted in the United States and Europe, has decided to create a third hub on a continent that is undergoing rapid expansion,” said ACO President Jean-Claude Plassart. “This is why we’ve asked Rémy Brouard to take on this mission that is decisive for the future, and the development of our club.”

Boasting an in-depth knowledge of the Asian markets, Brouard was the promoter of the Asian Le Mans Series double-header in Okayama, Japan in 2009, the first and so far only Le Mans-branded championship in Asia.

While the Asian Le Mans Series name hasn’t been in use since, the ACO has entered the Chinese market with two successful events at Zhuhai International Circuit, both of which were part of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

This year’s WEC will see two Asian rounds, including a visit to Mt. Fuji, Japan in October and the season-finale, to be held either in Shanghai or Zhuhai, China in November. With two races on the continent, it does give the possibility of the championship re-launching this year, although no official word has been given.

In addition to the development of the Asian Le Mans Series, Brouard will be tasked with the launch of ACO driving schools, driver training courses and facilitating construction of new circuits in the region.

Until Brouard’s former position as General Manager is filled, Plassart will work closely with ACO management to fulfill day-to-day functions.
