The star power keeps coming in the FIA World Endurance Championship, with news breaking last week that Kamui Kobayashi has joined AF Corse for its factory Ferrari program this year.

The 27-year-old Japanese open-wheel star, who has made 60 F1 starts since his debut with Toyota in 2009, will steer one of the squad's GTE-Pro class Ferrari F458 Italias in the eight-round global championship, beginning with next month's season-opening Six Hours of Silverstone.

“I’m very happy that Kamui is a member of our family," said team principal Amato Ferrari. "He is a young driver but very promising who, even though having never driven a GT before, proved himself to be very fast during the first tests.

"Over the course of the next few weeks, we will hold further sessions so that Kamui can become more confident in the car that he will drive in the World Championship."

Kobayashi was one of a handful of drivers given tryouts in a test at Motorland Aragon last month, which included fellow F1 refugee Karun Chandhok, who competed in the FIA WEC last year for JRM Racing.

The identity of Kobayashi's co-driver remains unclear, although AF Corse is expected to keep Gianmaria Bruni and Giancarlo Fisichella in the No. 51 Ferrari.
