The second day of testing at Sebring saw a near repeat from Monday’s daylong activities, with Audi Sport Team Joest again on top. The German manufacturer again swept the top three positions following Tuesday’s pair of one-hour sessions in preparation for Saturday’s 60th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Tom Kristensen topped the time charts, turning a 1:48.138 lap time in his No. 2 Audi R18 TDI. The eight-tome Le Mans winner, who will share his diesel-powered machine with Allan McNish and Dindo Capello, edged out the sister No. 3 entry of Timo Bernhard by 0.272 seconds.

"The first two days here have been constructive," Kristensen said. "We have three cars starting out more or less with the same setup, and we been trying a few different things. With three cars we learn things faster.

"To be one, two, three is maybe not a surprise, but that we have a little bit of gap now is a surprise to us at this stage. But let’s see how it will proceed for the entire week."

Reigning Le Mans champion Marcel Fassler was third, with a 1:48.839 lap time, also set during the afternoon session, which saw two red flags. The late morning session surprisingly ran incident-free.

The gasoline-powered LMP1s edged closer to the diesel brigade, with the American Le Mans Series designated No. 6 Muscle Milk Pickett Racing HPD ARX-03a of Klaus Graf, Lucas Luhr and Simon Pagenaud posting a 1:49.726 lap in the morning, less than two seconds adrift from the pace-setting Audi.

"We're really looking forward to the race but I think everyone at Muscle Milk Pickett Racing will be happy once the race is over because it has been a hectic last couple of months for them with very little time off and we would like nothing more than to give the guys a great result to thank them for all their hard work," Luhr said.

LMP2 saw the No. 39 Pecom Racing Oreca 03 Nissan of Soheil Ayari go quickest, thanks to the Frenchman’s 1:53.527 lap time set in the afternoon. Ayari edged out the Joao Barbosa-driven No. 055 Level 5 Motorsports HPD ARX-03b by 0.276 seconds, which topped the ALMS P2 category.

Second quickest in the WEC LMP2 class, and third overall among the cost-capped prototypes, was Ryan Dalziel in the brand-new Starworks Motorsport HPD ARX-03b, which overcame an engine issue in its first day of running.

AF Corse led the way in GTE-Pro, with the No. 51 Ferrari F458 Italia of Giancarlo Fisichella, Gianmaria Bruni and Toni Vilander turning a best time of 2:01.097. It edged out Monday’s pace-setting No. 59 Luxury Racing Ferrari of Jaime Melo by 0.043 seconds.

Quickest of the ALMS GT contingent was again the No. 45 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche of Joerg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Marco Holzer with a 2:01.189 lap time set in the morning.

In GTE-Am, Krohn Racing led the way with its green Ferrari F458 Italia of Nic Jonsson posting a respectable 2:02.991, while Colin Braun (CORE autosport) and Sean Edwards (NGT Motorsport) led the ALMS PC and GTC categories, respectively.

All three cars absent from activities on Monday turned its first laps today, including the JRM Racing HPD ARX-03a, which completed 13 laps in the afternoon session, which was used as the car’s initial roll-out. David Brabham will be joined by Peter Dumbreck and Karun Chandhok in the newest of the HPD LMP1 contenders.

No track action for WEC/ALMS competitors is scheduled for Wednesday, with three sessions of practice kicking off official activities on Thursday.
