Audi Sport Team Joest led the way in opening practice for Saturday's Six Hours of Sao Paulo, the fifth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Andre Lotterer took his hybrid-powered Audi R18 e-tron quattro to the top of the time charts, turning a best lap of 1:24.370. The two-time and defending 24 Hours of Le Mans winner edged out the sister Audi R18 ultra by 0.468 seconds.

It was newcomer and local favorite Lucas Di Grassi who set the 1:24.838 lap time in the No. 2 Audi during the slightly damp 90-minute session, which ran without any major incident.

The No. 7 Toyota TS030 Hybrid of Nicolas Lapierre was third, thanks to the Frenchman's 1:25.055 lap time, while Danny Watts turned an impressive 1:25.588 lap time that put the Strakka Racing HPD ARX-03a within 1.3 seconds of the pace-setting Audi.

LMP2 saw Starworks Motorsport quickest, with Stephane Sarrazin reeling off a 1:28.302 in the Venezuela-backed HPD ARX-03b.

Sarrazin, who raced here in the 2007 ELMS event, was 0.649 seconds quicker than Vitantonio Liuzzi, who laid down a 1:28.951 in his No. 32 Lotus Lola B12/80 Lotus late in the session.

AF Corse led the way in both production-based categories. Gianmaria Bruni was quickest in GTE-Pro, while Enrique Bernoldi paced GTE-Am.

Practice 2 is on tap for 3:30 p.m. local.
