With delays and the ongoing development of its new GRAND-AM GX-class car, Mazda has ruled out competing in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans with the new SKYACTIV-D LMP2 engine.

Mazda Motorsports Director John Doonan confirmed a revised timeline to SPEED.com for the new SpeedSource-tuned production diesel powerplant, originally scheduled to debut in this year's twice-around-the-clock French endurance classic.

"The SpeedSource guys have been so heavily focused on the [Mazda6 GRAND-AM] program, because they're doing everything," Doonan told SPEED.com. "They do have a [P2] chassis and they do plan to get the engine fitted into the chassis and test as much as they can this year and maybe run a few ALMS races.

"That would be a huge achievement and that's our goal."

Doonan confirmed that any running this year would be with SpeedSource's development car, with a full customer program, and return to Le Mans, now planned for 2014.

The delay in Mazda's P2 customer engine program follows news of Dempsey Racing going their separate ways with the Japanese manufacturer for 2013. Dempsey was earmarked as the first customer of the 2.2-liter diesel turbo powerplant.
