Renault appears to be the next manufacturer set to re-enter sports car racing, potentially leading to a future works LMP1 effort in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Multiple sources, including a report in the Le Mans newspaper "Le Maine Libre", indicate that an announcement is imminent by Renault, which could see the French manufacturer initially take on an engine supply program in LMP2 prior to a full assault for overall honors with a self-built factory prototype.

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest has scheduled a press conference at Circuit de la Sarthe for Friday, with club President Pierre Fillon set to make an "important announcement."

Many details of Renault's likely program remain unclear. A report by Racecar Engineering indicates that the manufacturer will debut an Alpine-badged powerplant with LMP2 team Signatech this year. The French squad's Le Mans entry is currently listed with a to-be-confirmed engine.

The engine supply deal would revive the Alpine name, last seen at Le Mans with the legendary A442 in the 1970s. Drivers such as Gerard Larousse and Henri Pescarolo piloted the V6-powered prototype, which won in its third LM24 attempt in 1978.

Renault's return to Le Mans would see it go head-to-head with partner Nissan, which dominantes the LMP2 field in numbers with its own 4.5-liter V8 powerplant. No word has been given on the likely configuration of the Renault-Alpine engine.

SPEED.com will have more on this developing story later this week.
