Toyota ended Friday on top of the time charts, as FIA World Endurance Championship teams prepare for Sunday's season-ending Six Hours of Shanghai.

Alex Wurz took his No. 7 Toyota TS030 Hybrid to a best time of 1:50.573 in Friday afternoon's 90-minute session. The Austrian outpaced the pair of Audi R18 e-tron quattros by more than one-second, in a day that belonged to Toyota.

The Japanese manufacturer will be searching for its third victory in the last four races following Toyota's most recent triumph on home soil in Japan.

"On paper this track should be quite good in terms of traffic but in reality off line is so dusty that it is pretty bad, so it will be interesting in the race," Wurz said. "It’s still early in the weekend; I am quite pleased but there are some places where we can optimise the car so there is still work to do.”

The No. 2 Audi of Tom Kristensen was second in the afternoon and on the day, thanks to a 1:51.731 lap time set by the eight-time Le Mans winner, who shares driving duties with Allan McNish.

Benoit Treluyer set the pace in the sister No. 1 entry, which was third. Treluyer and co-drivers Andre Lotterer and Marcel Fassler can clinch the World Championship with a fifth place finish or higher in the race.

Fresh off victory at Petit Le Mans, Rebellion Racing wound up quickest of the LMP1 privateers on Friday, with its Lola B12/60 Toyota of Neel Jani and Nicolas Prost setting a quick lap time of 1:52.576.

Another Lola led the way in LMP2, with the Lotus-badged entry of James Rossiter posting the quickest time in the cost-capped class.

Rossiter reeled off a best lap of 1:55.290 lap time in the No. 32 Lola B12/80 Lotus, which was also more than one-second clear of morning pace-setter John Martin in the No. 25 ADR-Delta Oreca 03 Nissan.

OAK Racing wound up third quickest in class on the day with its No. 35 Morgan-Nissan of Olivier Pla, Matthieu Lahaye and Jacques Nicolet.

GTE-Pro was led again by the No. 97 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8 of Darren Turner, who turned a 2:05.678 in the afternoon-into-dusk session.

Turner edged out the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari F458 Italia of Gianmaria Bruni and Giancarlo Fisichella by 0.100 seconds, with the Fuji class-winning Team Felbermayr-Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR rounding out the top-three in class.

AF Waltrip was quickest in GTE-Am, thanks to a 2:06.471 lap time set by super sub Marco Cioci in the team's No. 61 Ferrari F458 Italia.

Cioci will share the team's Prancing Horse with Rui Aguas and MWR co-owner Rob Kauffman this weekend. Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip was originally scheduled to fill the third seat this weekend.

No major incidents occurred in either of the 90-minute sessions today.

A final 60-minute Free Practice is on tap for Saturday morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon.

Forecasts currently call for a chance of showers tomorrow, which could add some new dynamics for teams taking part in this weekend's season finale in China.
