While Audi Sport Team Joest led the way in opening practice, rival Toyota proved to be on the pace as well, as FIA World Endurance Championship teams prepare for Sunday's Six Hours of Silverstone.

Benoit Treluyer topped the time charts with a best lap of 1:45.777 in his No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro. It was just 0.233 seconds quicker than Nicolas Lapierre in the one-and-only Toyota TS030 Hybrid competing this weekend.

Audi's conventional No. 2 R18 ultra of Allan McNish was third quickest with a 1:46.138, followed by Karun Chandhok, who ended up fastest of the privateers aboard his No. 22 JRM HPD ARX-03a in fourth.

Lap times Friday were a considerable two seconds quicker than last year's opening practice, showing significant improvement at the top of the pack.

LMP2 was led by OAK Racing, with the No. 35 Morgan-Nissan of Dominik Kailhamer laying down a 1:51.561 lap time. The Austrian was a mere 0.002 seconds faster than Alex Brundle aboard the No. 42 Greaves Motorsport Zytek Z11SN Nissan in second.

OAK's No. 24 Morgan-Nissan of Matthieu Lahaye was third, while American favorites Starworks Motorsport were ninth on the time charts after missing the first half of the 90-minute session due to a wiring issue with its Sebring and Le Mans class-winning HPD ARX-03b.

Gianmaria Bruni led the way in GTE-Pro, turning a 2:02.757 in his No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari FF58 Italia he'll share with Giancarlo Fisichella.

The Italian squad's sister machine of Andrea Bertonini was second quickest, followed by the No. 77 Team Felbermayr-Proton Porsche of Richard Lietz, more than four-tenths behind in third.

GTE-Am saw the AF-Waltrip Ferrari, driven this weekend by Marco Coici, Matt Griffin and Piergiuseppe Perazzini, go quickest with a 2:04.080 lap time.

The No. 98 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8 of Stuart Hall was second, followed by Georgia's Krohn Racing third, thanks to Nic Jonsson's 2:04.193 lap time in the lime green No. 57 Ferrari.

All 35 cars turned laps in the opening session with no major incidents reported.

Friday's second and final practice of the day is on tap for 4 p.m. local.
