The FIA and ACO released the entry list for the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship Friday in Paris, featuring 32 full-season entries.

Represented by teams from 11 different countries, the second year of the global sports car championship sees a better-than-expected grid, particularly in the LMP2 and GTE-Am ranks.

Audi will lead the charge again with a pair of R18 e-tron quattros, up against a surprising two-car entry from Toyota Racing. The Japanese manufacturer revealed last month that it had only submitted one full-season entry request by the championship's Jan. 16 entry deadline.

Single-car entries from Rebellion Racing (Lola B12/60 Toyota) and Strakka Racing (HPD ARX-03c) complete the thin six-car LMP1 field, which only sees a boost of two entries for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

LMP2 features a dozen cars, led by defending class champions Starworks Motorsport, which will return with a new HPD ARX-03b. Of note, eight of the 12 cars in class are Nissan powered, while two entries have been given to the new Lotus T128, which has yet to break cover.

Six cars will make up the GTE-Pro category, which effectively features all-factory lineups. Two cars each from AF Corse (Ferrari), Aston Martin Racing and Porsche AG Team Manthey, which will debut the new 991-based Porsche 911 RSR, should make the production-based ranks one of the hardest fought classes.

GTE-Am sees a boost to eight entries, despite only a single season-long Corvette C6.R for defending class champions Larbre Competition. Notable additions include two Aston Martin Racing customer-supported entries as well as the new U.S.-based 8Star Motorsports squad, which will field a Ferrari F458 Italia in conjunction with AF Corse.

“We are extremely pleased to announce a grid of 32 full season entries for the 2013 season," said ACO President Pierre Fillon. "2012 was a great first year for the championship and we hoped to secure between 28 and 30 cars on the list for 2013. To receive 32 full season entries underlines the importance of the WEC and a great indication that we have created a world championship that teams and manufacturers want to take part in.”

Following an encouraging, but rather expensive debut season for many teams, the FIA and ACO have continued to make efforts of cost-cutting, as series CEO Gerard Neveu explains:

“The FIA WEC will once again visit eight countries on four continents and the eight round calendar has been devised to reduce the logistical costs associated with a world championship. The races follow a logical progression around the globe and the events are spread out enough to allow the cars and equipment to be transported by ship or road instead of air where possible. This also has the added advantage of reducing the carbon footprint of the WEC significantly.

The championship kicks off with the Six Hours of Silverstone on April 14, the start of a three-race European stretch that includes the 6 Hours of Spa in May and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in mid-June. Next, the WEC heads to the Americas for the Six Hours of Sao Paulo on Sept. 1 and the U.S. round at the new Circuit Of The Americas on Sept. 22 before three Asian rounds in Japan, China and the season-ending 6 Hours of Bahrain on Nov. 30.

The series will hold an official pre-season test at Paul Ricard on March 29-30.
