In addition to the 30 WEC entries, which all gained places on the grid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a further 26 cars were selected by the ACO to complete the 56-car starting field for the world's greatest endurance race.

A second Pescarolo entry will take part, which will see the return of the Japanese Dome-Judd to la Sarthe, with Peugeot refugees Nicolas Minassian and Sebastien Bourdais at the wheel.

Dyson Racing will make its Le Mans debut with a pair of new Lola B12/60 Mazdas as well, with Guy Smith and Chris Dyson the confirmed drivers thus far.

A whopping 18 cars make up the LMP2 field, half of them coming from WEC full-season entrants.

Notable additions include the Level 5 Motorsports HPD ARX-03b for Scott Tucker and a second Greaves Motorsport Zytek Z11SN Nissan for father-and-son Martin and Alex Brundle, along with 2008 Nissan GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez.

GTE-Pro features a rather slim nine-car entry, with defending Le Mans class winners Corvette Racing returning with a pair of Corvette C6.Rs, as well as fellow ALMS squad Flying Lizard Motorsports, which has a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR entered in both the Pro and Am categories.

Thirteen cars are listed in GTE-Am.

Confirmation also came through of Highcroft Racing's Deltawing effort, which will take the 56th pit as an unclassified entry. Marino Franchitti, who was in line for a drive with the factory Peugeot squad prior to its pull-out, is listed as the nominated driver.

As far as reserve entrants go, five are listed in the prototype category, including Hope Racing's Oreca Swiss HyTech Hybrid, and four in GTE. Among them are factory Lotus and Aston Martin entries with drivers Johnny Mowlem and Darren Turner, which do not have confirmed places on the 56-car grid.

“In 2012, the Le Mans 24 Hours will, more than ever before, pursue its vocation as a test bed for the most daring innovators and visionary manufacturers," said ACO President Jean-Claude Plassart. "Thus, Audi and Toyota will cross swords with hybrid-powered cars, the new challenge of the eightieth race.

"Among the fifty-six entries the three major manufacturers in the world (GM, VAG and Toyota) will all be represented by works cars: proof that the values of endurance which combine technology, sporting spirit, passion, openess and popularity are flourishing as never before!”

The Le Mans Test Day is scheduled for June 3, with the 80th running of the Le Mans 24 Hours two weeks later on June 16-17.
