“My Take” on Danica Patrick

"My Take" is a regular feature of "Wind Tunnel," Dave Despain's weekly motorsports phone-in show, seen only on Speed Channel. "Wind Tunnel" airs live at 11pm eastern every Friday night.

Another thought provoking email.....

"Dave, what did you think about the Danica Patrick pics in FHM? Thanks, Bubba."

Y'know, I only read FHM for the interviews and I applaud Danica's quotes to the effect that slow drivers ought to get the hell out of the passing lane. But because - and only because - you asked, I also checked out Ms. Patrick's revealing, 'auto' erotic photo spread, and I confess to mixed emotions. You asked for my take, so here goes.

En route to this year's big break - the Team Rahall Toyota Atlantic ride she debuted this weekend - Danica has been billed as "the real deal," an honest-to-goodness racer and not just another pretty face.

Now, as the magazine hypes, she "reveals what's underneath her driving suit," and we confront the reality that this talented driver is also a beautiful and sexy young woman, willing to use all those assets to advance her career.

Frankly, part of me is disappointed by that....the part that sympathizes with the women's movement, is offended by the exploitation of women as sex objects, and views motorsports as a great opportunity for females to excel. Because, unlike the stick-and-ball games, driving or riding fast isn't all about upper body strength.

But I also understand that sex sells, and I try not to be hypocritical. I make my living in
two businesses - racing and television - which will do just about anything to sell - dare I say "prostitute themselves" - in pursuit of public attention and the almighty sponsor dollar.

For example, would anyone argue that our "Sebring Party" reporter's upper body did not play a disproportionate part in her reportage on that event?

And then there's the important editorial contribution made by Umbrellagirls.com to our "Two Wheeled Tuesday" line-up.

Point is, I'm not in much of a position to criticize Danica Patrick, even if I were so inclined.

Besides, if Danica flashes a little well-tanned hide, creates a big buzz, attracts a bunch of new fans, delivers the all-important advertising impressions to those fans, and thus earns the appreciation of her sponsors...well, who exploited whom??

What's more, props to Ms. D. for leading our own Tommy Kendall around the Long Beach paddock last year on a leash, exposing T.K. for the horn dog that he really is.

So...bottom line...what do I think of the Danica Patrick pictures in FHM??

Y'know what? I think I'm just gonna have to study them a little more and see if I can't resolve my internal conflicts on this issue.

That's my take...I'd like to hear yours.
