Just when you thought the Countdown to the Championship had lost its shine, Saturday's qualifying at the NHRA Arizona Nationals injected some life in the playoffs.

Spencer Massey's FRAM Top Fuel dragster, which is No. 1 in the points, did not qualify for Sunday's eliminations, which suddenly opens the door for the rest of the field, including No. 1 qualifier Larry Dixon.

"I'm not even looking that far down the road," Dixon said. "We'll get the car prepared, get a good night's sleep and get out there first round."

Saturday's other No. 1s were Cruz Pedregon in Funny Car, Mike Edwards in Pro Stock and Hector Arana Jr. in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Dixon, who had a best time of 3.919 seconds at 303.84 mph, said that while the opportunity is out there to make a move on Massey, capitalizing on it on a 130 degree track is another issue entirely.

"Spencer's team are still the point leaders and could still be the point leaders at the end of the day tomorrow," Dixon said. "You have to keep digging and scratching until the racing is over.

"I'll probably sleep as well as Del Worsham, Antron Brown and a lot of other guys. There's an opportunity there and a good showing tomorrow would help."

Dixon faces No. 16 qualifier Terry McMillen in the first round on Sunday morning. McMillen's Amile Oil rail got into the field with a pass of 4.131 seconds at 253.33 mph.

Pedregon's 4.215 at 296,37 mph held from Friday night. Pedregon and the Snap-on Tools Toyota dominated at the last race where high temperatures were an issue.

"We're going to try to be steady," Pedregon said. "The last run was important because it did what we asked it to do. We made three out of four solid runs. We're looking good."

The DHL Toyota driven by Jeff Arend is Pedregon's first round foe. Arend ran a 4.411 at 274.55 mph for his qualifying pass.

Ron Capps' qualifying streak was broken at 105 when his team wasn't able to get the Napa Dodge Charger into the field.

Mike Edwards and the Penhall Pontiac GXP broke the stranglehold that the Summit Racing Pontiac had on the Pro Stock No. 1 spot. Edwards ran a 6.617 at 210.28 mph to hold off points leader Jason Line for the top spot.

"We're struggling to get off the starting line, so it's got us scratching our heads," Edwards said. "We feel good about what we can do once we get off the line. We'll see what happens tomorrow."

Edwards faces the K&N Filters Pontiac driven by veteran Warren Johnson, who ran a 6.714 at 207.50 mph.

Arana continued to stake his claim on the NHRA rookie of the year title by putting the Lucas Oil Buell into the No. 1 spot for the third straight time and sixth overall.

"Even if we would've had another run Friday night, we had the horsepower," Arana said. "We just had to have the clutch package together. That's what we did this morning. We got the clutch to hook up and had a .106 second 60-foot. Everything else came together."

Arana had a best pass of 6.889 seconds at 194.94 mph. He faces David hope's Vroom Racing Buell, which had a best pass of 7.115 seconds at 187.78 mph.

Eliminations for the NHRA Arizona Nationals get under way at 11 a.m. PDT on Sunday.
