Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson summed up Friday's racing at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals: "Something weird is going on."
A handful of Funny Cars were able to make a full pass down the Pacific Raceways, and Wilkerson's Levi, Ray and Shoup Ford was among the precious few. John Force, whose Castrol High Mileage Ford Mustang was tops on Friday was equally baffled.
"Something is going on," Force said. "A couple of guys can make the wrong call. Too many has made wrong calls. When you look at the whole pack, Funny Car is struggling. Something freaky is going on out there."
Other provisional No. 1s were Del Worsham in Top Fuel and Greg Anderson in Pro Stock.
Force's run of 4.124 seconds at 304.87 mph was more than a .10 seconds ahead of second-place Wilkerson.
"You have to race what's out there and you have to figure it out," Force said. "We got down it. We softened the car up more to get down it the second run, but I still got in trouble.
"The NHRA tries to keep Pro Stock, Funny Car and Top Fuel happy, and you just can't make everybody happy."
Force said when the day broke with agreeable temperatures and some cloud cover, that there would be not limit to the runs the cars could put down.
"We were all excited this morning," Force said. "This is going to be gorilla, everybody is going to put up big numbers. Mike Neff was trying to run a 4.05 out of the box, but when he saw everyone in trouble he pulled it back."
It was so bad for the Funny Cars that 14 of 15 Pro Stock cars entered ran quicker times than eight of the 18 nitro-powered Funny Cars.
Conditions didn't bother the red-hot Worsham and the Al-Anabi Racing dragster, which had a best pass of 3.830 seconds at 319.07 mph.
"The track was definitely great in the first session," Worsham said. "It's so hard to tell at this racetrack, you are at sea level, there are all these trees. You think something is wrong with the track and somebody rips off a 3.83 like we did.
"There obviously a setup to get down there. We got it right 50 percent of the time today. You make power so easy here, I think people forget that and you get out line pretty quick."
Anderson and Mike Edwards ran identical ETs of 6.541 seconds during their Pro Stock runs, but Anderson's speed of 211.16 mph in the Summit Racing Pontiac GXP was good enough to edge Edwards' Penhall Pontiac GXP for the No. 1 spot.
"We're getting our groove going," Anderson said. "I love the weather, I love the cloud cover and it really come to the racecars today. There's a little extra incentive to get the No. 1 spot because there are only 15 cars here this weekend. Somebody is going to get a pass into the second round. For one night, I've got a leg up on that."
Qualifying continues Saturday with two qualifying sessions at Pacific Raceways starting at 11 a.m. PDT.
