Morgan Lucas guided the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster for victory circle for the second time this season, defeating Antron Brown in the finals of the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Royal Purple Raceway.
"I've never felt like this at any point in my Top Fuel career," said Lucas, who turned pro in the latter part of 2004 after a successful run in Top Alcohol Dragster. "To pull up to the starting line on race day knowing you have the car to win the race is just hard to describe. I feel really blessed.
Other winners on Sunday were Mike Neff in Funny Car, Vincent Nobile in Pro Stock and Andrew Hines in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Lucas bounced back from a disappointing weekend in Charlotte by winning the race from the No. 1 qualifier position and continuing his strong season.
"I know that if I can drive even half as good as this car runs, I'll have a great chance to turn on the win light," Lucas said. "I mean, we were low of every round. I know that's never happened to me before. What an incredible job by Aaron (Brooks, crew chief) and the guys. Wow!"
In the final, the Brown's Aaron's dragster got off the line first, but that was about all that went right for his car. Brown went up in smoke early as Lucas cruised on to the finish with a pass of 3.848 seconds at 320.81 mph as Brown coasted across in 5.894 seconds at 117.05 mph.
"This one's for Mom and Dad," Lucas said. "It's for GEICO, Lucas Oil, MAVTV, Toyota and everyone else that has stood with us over the years. I have no doubt that people doubted my abilities and I gave them no reason to have any confidence in what we could do, but we paid a lot of dues and learned a lot of different things to get to this point. Now we need to just keep making good decisions and stay after it."
Neff kept the Funny Car Wally in the John Force Racing family as his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang beat Ron Capps and the Napa Dodge Charger in the final.
"I'm just glad I could keep the string going for John Force Racing," Neff said. "I feel pressure but that's just the business we're in. We're a top team and we were built on winning. I feel it, but I don't get pressure from John or anyone else. Just myself."
The race was a dead heat off the starting line and Neff blasted to the finish with a 4.239 at 301.67 with Capps losing cylinders down the track and crossing in 4.476 at 211.79 mph.
"This whole race was one of a kind," Neff said. "To not be qualified until the last session and then have a wacky couple of rounds today was a nail-biter."
Every Funny Car race this season has been won by a John Force Racing Ford.
Nobile's Mountain View Tire Dodge Avenger edged out David Connolly's Alamo Iron Works/KLR Group Chevy by about 3 feet at the finish line for his win.
"It's an amazing feeling," said Nobile. "In the semis, we actually had to swap motors in that short amount of time and the crew did it with now flaws and everything was perfect. The crew produces a really fast race car. I owe it to all of them."
Nobile had a .009 second reaction time, with Connolly an equally impressive .011 second RT. Nobile crossed the line first with a 6.595 lap at 210.14 mph and Connolly finished with a 6.604 at 210.41 mph.
Hines used a perfect .000 light to get his Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson past Hector Arana Jr. and the Lucas Oil Buell on a holeshot.
"I knew I'd need a good light, but I wasn't expecting a .000," Hines said. "I'm lucky I didn't roll in an eighth of an inch more or I'd have red-lighted. We had to add 20-pounds so I figured I'd need to win on a holeshot in order to have a chance."
Arana got off the line in .026 seconds and ran a 6.886 second pass at 196.33 mph, but it wasn't enough to get around Hines who crossed the finish line first with a 6.905 at 194.52 mph.
Next for the NHRA Full Throttle Series is the May 4-6 Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals from Atlanta Dragway.
