In an unusual move for NHRA drag racing, title contender Del Worsham and Al-Anabi Racing pulled out a brand new racecar for the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals, the next-to-last race of the season.
"For the record, I'm not driving Larry Dixon's car (from 2010)," Worsham said. "But this one is running well. The first time it saw the light of day was when we took it out of the truck on Friday."
Teams tend to stick with chassis that are predictable from beginning of the season to the end, but the unorthodox move has panned out so far, as Worsham qualified No. 1 on Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a best pass of 3.796 seconds at 322.88 mph.
Other No. 1s on Saturday were Ron Capps in Funny Car, Mike Edwards in Pro Stock and Hector Arana Jr. in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Worsham, who has six wins and three runner-ups this season, started the weekend in fourth place, 51 points behind leader Antron Brown.
"We were on a great run last night and kind of let one get away," Worsham said. "When it cooled down this morning, Alan Johnson came through the trailer and asked, 'What if we go 3.80 and take the No. 1 spot?' I said it sounded good to me.
"With all the qualifying points out there we kind of gained a round but just picking up little points here and there. It's pretty big and we need to maintain that through Pomona now."
The Al-Anabi Racing dragster goes up against No. 16 qualifier Shawn Langdon, who had a best pass of 3.897 seconds at 289.01 mph.
Capps rebounded from a DNQ in Phoenix two weeks ago to put the Napa Dodge Charger at the top of the Funny Car charts.
"Zero to hero? It's pretty cool," Capps said. "I'm so proud of the guys. The dedication the Napa guys have to come here and test (after Phoenix) when they could have gone home – that was the spark they needed."
Capps ran a 4.080 pass at 315.49 mph. He goes up against Todd Lesenko, who posted a 4.236 second lap at 298.60 mph in the Worsham Racing Dodge Charger.
Edwards and the Penhall Pontiac knocked the Summit Racing Pontiac off the top perch with a best pass of 6.594 seconds at 208.84 mph.
"It just feels good to make a good run," Edwards said. "We just did it at the right time. Conditions were best all weekend this morning. It was really an outstanding run, one of the best we've ever made."
Edwards will face Mark Wolfe and his Wolfe Racing Ford Mustang, who had a best lap of 6.657 at 206.89 mph.
Arana and the Lucas Oil Buell continued to terrorize the Pro Stock bike class with his fourth consecutive No. 1 qualifier, his seventh overall on the season.
"This is a tough class," Arana said. "To be good, you have to be 100 percent all the time. We're having a lot of fun out here right now."
Arana ran a best lap of 6.879 seconds at 194.46 mph and he squares off against Matt Guidera's Rum Bum Racing Buell, which went 7.067 at 187.18 mph.
Eliminations at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway get under way at 11 a.m. PDT on Sunday.
