Minutes after the final checkered flag falls at Eldora Speedway, scores of dusty, sweaty fans make their way to the exit gates and call it an evening. Meanwhile, the night is far from over for the even more dusty and sweaty crews of the World of Outlaw Late Model Series will be in action at Central Ohio’s Sharon Speedway in less than 24 hours. 2007 series champion Steve Francis allowed me to ride along with his crew as they caravanned the 278 miles from Eldora to Sharon. It was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up and won’t soon forget!

11:35 p.m. – Teams begin to pack up the cars and equipment.

11:58 p.m. – Francis drives the final ingredient into the complicatedly packed hauler – the team’s four-wheeler.

12:03 a.m. – The hauler’s rear door is closed and we’re ready to go! We’ll
be heading to our destination of Hartford, Ohio alongside the team transporters of fellow series drivers Darrell Lanigan, Josh Richards and Shannon Babb. Before departing, crew members debate if the onboard GPS units are providing the most-direct route. Imagine that – a bunch of men arguing over directions!

12:25 a.m. – After 22 minutes of men, maps and mayhem, the caravan lines up and eases out of the Eldora infield. Note: according to the GPS, our estimated time of arrival in Hartford is 5:14 a.m.

12:27 a.m. – We stop to pick up a straggler at the payout trailer.

12:30 a.m. – We’re officially on the road! The revised ETA is 5:20 a.m.
