In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Kings Royal, here are 25 observations from my first visit to the famed Eldora Speedway:
1. Daytona, Indianapolis and Bristol are often mentioned race tracks which drop the jaws of fans upon their initial visit. Let it be known throughout the land that Eldora has officially been added to the list. Standing at the fence in turn one, watching 410 sprints fly by is one of the most amazing spectacles in the world of motorsports!
2. When in Daytona for the NASCAR weekend a few weeks ago, the large amount of empty camping spaces in the infield really caught my eye. These absentees must have decided to go to Rossburg, Ohio instead! On Friday, Eldora’s grounds were absolutely packed and the crowd did nothing but increase throughout the weekend.
3. Rural Ohio is a gorgeous part of the country and a perfect place for a race track as there are no neighbors to complain of noise and dust. I hope it stays this way.
4. Race fans
5. Rain delays prompt those in attendance to concoct their own forms of entertainment… so if a few bold, thrillseeking (and maybe a little inebriated) fans choose to belly flop into giant mud puddles for a few laughs, then they should have the right to do so. Track security needs to lighten up and let the fans have their fun. Ohio is in America, right?
6. The Tunnel of Love which runs under the track is adorned with an Eddie Gossage nameplate. Is there more to the story here? On second thought, maybe we don’t want to know the answer to that.
7. There is something amusing about seeing big-time sprint car drivers lounging around in jean shorts and flip-flops.
8. Shirts should be mandatory for some race fans.
