The racing world lost one of its great supporters and characters over the weekend when MOMO founder Gianpiero Moretti died at the age of 71.

A life-long devotee to sports car racing, Moretti's exploits as an owner and driver across three decades of IMSA competition caught the attention of fans and earned the respect of his fellow racers.

Driving a selection og Porsche 930s, 935s and 962, Moretti's famous red and yellow MOMO livery became part of IMSA's landscape in the 1970s and 1980s, and in later years, the MOMO colors looked just as good on the different Nissan, Gebhardt and Ferrari prototypes he drove.

Moretti shared his racing adventures with renowned drivers like Derek Bell, Max Papis, Wayne Taylor and an impressive list of sports car's elite on the way to making over 250 starts, earning 25 wins and visiting the podium more than 50 times.

The passionate and playful Italian will be greatly missed.
