With Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca track officials estimating its largest Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (previously known as the Monterey Historics) event since 1994, Sunday's activities, with eight race groups set to compete in the afternoon, closed the weekend in stellar fashion.

Group 1B, for 1955 -1961 Sports Racing cars under 2000cc kicked off the festivities after the lunch break, and Cameron Healy drove his 1953 Cooper Porsche Special to victory ahead of Herbert Wetanson in his 1960 Lola Mk-I.

The 26-car Group 2B for 1958-1963 Formula Junior cars saw motoring journalist Mark Gillies pilot his 1962 Lotus 22 to the win over local driver Jimmy Domingos in a 1962 Cooper T-59 FJ.

Group 3B for 1955-1961 Sports Racing cars over 2000cc was won by Donald Orosco in a 1958 Lotus 15. Orosco, who owned the giant Shelby car hauler on display in the paddock, also won at the auction Saturday night when the transporter fetched $900,000. Orosco was followed home by the 1959 Lister Costin driven by Erickson Shirley.

David Vegher marched to first place in a 1979 Chevron B36 in Group 4B for 1970-1979 Sports Racing cars under 2000cc, edging Keith Frieser's 1972 Lola 290.

Group 5B for 1947-1955 Sports Racing and GT cars saw David Swig, son of the late vintage racing patriarch Martin Swig, drive into Victory Circle with his 1957 Monsterati Special, beating out Steve Schuler in a 1950 Allard J-2.

This writer's favorite class of the day--and at all times, Group 6B for 1981-1989 FIA Mfg. championship cars and IMSA GTP cars, was won by sponsor guru Zak Brown in his ex-Dyson Racing 1986 Porsche 962. Brown streaked away from second-place Wade Carter in an older but equally cool 1981 Lola T600.

Ernie Spada Jr. won the penultimate race of the day in his 1970 Chevron B8 in the Group 7B for 1961-1966 GT cars under 2500cc, leading home a charging John Hugenholtz in a 1964 Lotus Elan 26R.

The final race of the 2012 Reunion was reserved for Group 8B, 1974-1990 Stock Cars with disc brakes, which was claimed by Tom Klauer in an ex-Tim Richmond 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, but only after waging a race-long duel with the ex-Rusty Wallace 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Jim Hague.

Reunion officials also named Corvette as the featured marque for the 2013 event.
