REVIEWED:  “RALLYCOURSE: The Official Yearbook of the WRC”
Written by: Gregg Leary
Charlotte, NC

Editor: David Evans
Foreword: Sebastien Loeb

“RALLYCOURSE” joins “AUTOCOURSE” and “MOTOCOURSE” in the Pantheon of Motorsports Excellence. Now in its 27th year of publication, “RALLYCOURSE” combines excellent journalism with superb photography that almost captures the excitement of the FIA World Rally Championship. And I mean that in a nice way. I don’t think any book, however tremendous, can quite do justice to a sport that many consider has the greatest drivers in the world, battling on some of the most demanding circuits in some of the most appalling weather conditions on the planet. On-board cameras probably come the closest to defining the essence of World Rally, but “RALLYCOURSE” is as close as a printed publication can come.

Sebastien Loeb graces the dust jacket, piloting his Citroen C4 as it explodes into flight. Loeb also wrote the Foreword.

“There are two records in the sport that I’m interested in: the number of wins and the number of titles. Now I have both those records, which is nice. But it’s not fair to compare this with other drivers. This is
a different generation now. How can I say I would have done the same in the 1990s or even the ‘80s? I can’t. All I can do is drive my rally car, and that’s what I’ll be doing in the C4 WRC again in 2009. I have five titles, what more can I do but aim for six?”

How can you not like this guy? (Loeb is a true racer. In 2008 he drove in France’s Porsche Cup, tested the Red Bull RB4 Formula 1 car and piloted the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP Le Mans sports car.)

The dustcover blurb summarizes the 2008-2009 Edition.

“Sebastien Loeb became the first driver ever to win five world titles, eclipsing the achievements of Tommi Makinen and Juha Kankkunen. What makes Loeb’s record even more outstanding-if that were possible-is that he has done it in successive seasons.

As usual, every aspect of the World Rally Championship is covered in complete detail in the coming 192 pages: every stage time charted, every fastest time noted and every point logged. But the WRC is about more than just statistics; it’s about passion, competition and driving as fast as you dare down the best roads this planet has to offer.
