The record books were re-written this week at Road America when Scott Tucker became the first driver to break the two-minute per lap barrier in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

The Level 5 Motorsports owner/driver then backed it up with a flag-to-flag victory Saturday in D Sports Racing, earning his second SCCA National Championship of the weekend and fifth of his career.

Tucker's win came at the wheel of a specially developed West WX10/ST01a prototype racer, a project that the two-time and defending ALMS class champions had been working on since the start of the year.

“I really owe it to the whole team, my job’s the easy part,” Tucker said after his DSR win. “We worked on this the whole year and had a couple of goals. One was to go under two minutes and the other obviously was to win the race."

Led by engineer Jeff Braun, engine builder Rick Kippley and crew chief Jeff Campbell, the one-of-a-kind prototype, powered by a turbocharged Suzuki motorcycle engine, saw extensive wind tunnel and on-track tests, including numerous sessions by sports car standout Colin Braun, over the course of the summer months.

But it was all up to Tucker to nail down the record-setting lap time of 1:58.997 in qualifying on Wednesday. He backed it up in the race, turning four additional sub two-minute lap times en route to a 34-second victory in the 13-lap championship-deciding race.

“The big question was reliability and all of the development work we’ve done," Tucker said. "The car ran great. It was getting a little tricky there at the end as it was getting wet. These cars are pretty unforgiving in the wet. Luckily we made it through. My hats off to the guys for prepping the car and making sure it was ready to go.

“We achieved a lot of big things with this thing that we set out to do.”

Having also taken top honors in the STO class on Thursday, Tucker and Level 5 will shift focus back back to the ALMS, as they go for their third consecutive class victory at Petit Le Mans.

With a 14-point lead over Conquest Endurance's Martin Plowman and David Heinemeier Hansson, Tucker and co-driver Christophe Bouchut will need to only complete 70 percent of the race to be crowned back-to-back P2 class champions.
