SPEED will be the exclusive American broadcast home for two of the most important and significant racing events on the international motorsports calendar this March - and both on the same weekend.
The 56th annual Mobil Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Australian Grand Prix will kick off the 2008 American Le Mans Series and Formula One seasons respectively, with nearly 18 hours of live on-track and ‘in the paddock’ coverage slated for these two significant races during the weekend.
Sebring, which begins at 9:30 am ET/6:30 am PT on March 15 from historic Sebring International Raceway, will be anchored by play-by-play announcer Leigh Diffey, with color provided by former Trans-Am Series champion Dorsey Schroeder and veteran sports car racer Calvin Fish. From the paddock and on pit road, former professional drivers Brian Till and Chris Neville will be providing the latest news. The same crew will also be hosting an inaugural Sebring/ALMS special during night practice on March 13 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, previewing the upcoming race and the 2008 American Le Mans Series season.
“We’re looking forward to our expanded coverage from Sebring, especially since it will be our first ALMS race in high definition,” said Rick Miner, SPEED SVP of Production & Operations. “There are many great storylines in this year’s race – with Peugeot and Audi re-engaging their diesel-powered battles – not to mention the outstanding LMP-2 category teams competing.”
The SPEED Formula One crew is also back for another season, as Bob Varsha (play-by-play), David Hobbs and Steve Matchett (color commentary) will be joined by Peter Windsor – who will once again be in the garages and walking pit road with interesting interviews and insights. The Australian Grand Prix, which takes place in the city of Melbourne on the downtown streets of picturesque Albert Park, starts March 13 as the first live practice of the season debuts at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.
Then, following the conclusion of Sebring,
“This could be a very interesting season in Formula One,” Miner said. “With the way Kimi (Raikkonen) came back and won the championship last year; and the fact that a very talented Lewis Hamilton now has a year under his belt – we could see an extremely tight and competitive race towards this year’s World Driving Championship.
“There will be a special treat for our Formula One audience this season as well,” Miner added. “SPEED has expanded the RPM feature of our broadcasts, as Steve Matchett will be touring a few of these exclusive Formula One race team headquarters – getting ‘behind the scenes’ looks at what it takes to compete at the highest level of motor sport. When you add that to our second season of Formula One Debrief and Inside Grand Prix, our F1 coverage continues to explore this exclusive world from many different angles.”
