If you haven’t reached your fill of goosebump moments watching the XXX Summer Olympics from London, prepare yourself for a few minutes with Alex Zanardi.
On the Sunday edition of SPEED Center (7 p.m. ET), SPEED visits with the popular racer, who lost both legs in a devastating accident at Lausitzring in 2001. Returning as an auto racer in 2003, Zanardi also took up paracycling and now sets his sights on winning a gold medal for Italy in the upcoming Paralympics in London, beginning Aug. 29.
Said Zanardi in the segment: “The fact that I’ve been able not only to turn a misfortune into an opportunity, but to turn it into a great opportunity … I wouldn’t do what I am doing if I didn’t love it. The fact that I’m loving paracycling, what I am doing today, the fact that I’ve been able to qualify and represent my nation in the next Olympic games is something I will forever tell my friends.”
As part of the SPEED Center segment, Zanardi’s friends and former open-wheel competitors weigh in on the cycling effort:
“He’s just different, Zanardi,” said current and four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti. “He doesn’t think the same as us. He doesn’t know what the word ‘no’ means. When he had his accident, I thought if he can just get through this, I think he’ll show us some incredible stuff.”
“His determination brought him to where he is right now,” added versatile racer and countryman Max Papis. “Even if he doesn’t have his legs, he’s still the same person. Same will. Alex has a way of showing people that you can still reach your goals and dreams in life, even when things don’t go exactly your way.”
A full transcript of the segment will be available immediately after it airs on SPEED Center.
