Defending race winner Lou Gigliotti, of Dallas, Texas, turned a lap quicker than his pole-winning time last year to top practice at Miller Motorsports for Round Three of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship, part of the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix. Tommy Archer, of Duluth , Minn. , and Eric Curran, of East Hampton , Mass. , were second and third quick respectively.

Putting on a fresh set of tires and laying all his cards on the table, Gigliotti set a time of 2:55.968 (91.775 mph) around the 24-turn, 4.486-mile track in his No. 28 LG Pro Long Tube Headers Chevrolet Corvette. The time is 0.264-second faster than his pole-winning time here last year and according to Gigliotti, is fastest he expects to be all weekend.

"That's all I got," Gigliotti said. "We stickered up, we went out, we did a qualifying lap and threw down the gauntlet. Everyone knows what my time is. I had the pole last year, so now they can have at it. If I qualify in the top five with that time tomorrow I'll be amazed. That's my time, that's all I can do. I hope I can beat it by one or two tenths tomorrow. I hope it's cooler in the
morning and we get a better time, but that's as fast as I can go today.

Fastest in the morning session, Tommy Archer was unable to improve his time of 2:56.616 (91.439 mph) in the afternoon and fell to second fastest in his No. 5 MOPAR/Autohaus Motorsport Dodge Viper.

After leading much of the afternoon session, Curran was unable to match of the pace Gigliotti and Archer , ending his day third on the time sheets with a fast lap of 2:57.787 (90.836 mph) in his No. 30 Whelen Engineering Chevrolet Corvette.

Driving the No. 22 K-PAX Racing LLC/Jim Haughey Porsche 911 GT3, Pobst was the fourth fastest car in SCCA SPEED GT practice with a time of 2:57.974 (90.741 mph). Following Pobst on the time sheets is Doug Peterson, of Bonita Springs , Fla. , in the No. 87 3-Dimensional Services/LG Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette, who's lap of 2:58.130 (90.661 mph) from the morning session was good enough for fifth on the day.

Qualifying for Round Three of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship will take place on Friday, May 18, at 11:30 a.m. (MDT). The 14-lap race is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at 9:45 a.m. (MDT).
