August 2007

Warning: This stuff is addictive.

My name’s Kevin Necessary, and you could say I got the bug. I’m hooked on off-road racing, and I’m not looking for a cure.

Anyway, after taking a crack at last year’s Baja 1000, the boys and I were looking for a little redemption if you know what I mean. Not making it to the finish line was a real burn and we needed another chance to make it right. We were looking for another race and searching the globe for something that would be a little different from Mexico. When we heard Ryan was racing in the Taupo 1000 we looked into it and decided to make a run at it. Why not, right? New Zealand sounded awesome and the race seemed manageable, all we needed to do was get the truck up and running and ship the old girl over there. Easier said then done.

Competing in Baja, we learned a lot about how to set the Toyota FJ Cruiser up to run in the dirt. By putting ourselves to the test and learning from our mistakes, and believe me, we made plenty of them, the FJ should benefit a lot this year. We plan on applying the learnings we have to rebuilding the truck this year. In the end, we will do our best and hope the rig makes it to the finish line. But that’s just half the problem, I have to ship everything over there first and it ain’t cheap! But I’m committed now so I just have to suck it up.

Another thing, we learned in Baja is that you gotta swap drivers more often instead of trying to stretch it
out for longer stints. We also know we need to try and be better prepared with parts in case something goes wrong. The most important thing we learned was how to better set up the suspension. Last year, we didn’t know our butts from our elbows and the truck rode like crud. There was barely any front suspension travel and it slowed us way down.

As for Ryan, it’ll be interesting to see how he does in his FJ Cruiser, I don’t feel like I’ll be competing against him. He was born into it and has been around it his whole life, and it’s his business to win races, not mine. That being said, I sure hope he and his boys won’t mind helping us out if we run into trouble.

I’d imagine plenty of people are expecting us to get into a ton of trouble. Why wouldn’t they? We run a little ragged to say the least and learn by fire. But we sure enjoy the ride. The deal is we’re in it to for a good time, and we love competing. We know when it’s time to party, and when it’s time to go racing. This is all about going out there and experiencing something epic and coming back with some killer stories – it’s not just about trying to win a race, per se.

But this isn’t just all fun and games, by any means. It’s affecting our work, it’s affecting our families, it’s affecting our pocketbooks, and it’s affecting every aspect of our lives. But we’re all stoked, and I don’t think any of us would have things any other way.
