Jerry Coons Jr. started on the pole in Thursday night's USAC Indiana Sprint Week show at Kamp Speedway. That was bad news for the other 24 drivers.
The two-time USAC midget champion led all 30 laps and finished four seconds ahead of Tracy Hines for his third consecutive win (sprints and midgets in 2007) at this quarter-mile track.
More importantly, it really tightened up the point standings in the Chevrolet/Fatheadz sponsored series with two races remaining in the 21st annual showcase for Indiana dirt tracks.
Heading for Bloomington Friday night and the finale Saturday at Haubstadt, Dave Darland owns a five-point edge over Levi Jones, is 11 better than Shane Cottle, 13 ahead of Coons and is 15 in front of Hines.
But Thursday evening was all Coons, although he
"We'd been pretty average this past week, not very good, so my guys went back, took the car to the bare frame and busted their butt," said the 36-year-old native of Arizona. "We'd won with this car last year so we knew we were missing something and tonight I was really dialed in.
"I took off and was lapping some pretty good guys by Lap 5 so I was kinda on cruise control. It was a lot of fun."
Cottle put on a show as he stormed from 17th to third despite the fact there were no yellow flags. Jesse Hocket finished fourth, Jones came from 13th to fifth and 16-year-old Cole Whitt charged from 12th to sixth.
Coons' triumph also moved him within 31 points of Jones in the national standings.
