In one of the wildest and most exciting races in the 21-year history of Indiana Sprint Week, Jon Stanbrough and Robert Ballou flipped while trying to get to the checkered flag first and Dave Darland finally wound up in victory lane Sunday night at Kokomo Speedway.
A year after leading 29 of 30 circuits and then being passed on the last lap by Stanbrough, Darland got some revenge by giving Ballou a slide job coming out of Turn 4 and claiming the race named in honor of his father, Bob.
It also gave the 41-year-old USAC veteran the lead in the point standings after four of seven stops in the annual dirt-track festival.
Ballou, a cushion-riding ace who had been running up against a very treacherous ledge all evening, was pinned against the fence exiting the corner by Darland and flipped down the straightaway as the checker waved.
He escaped injury and was credited with 10th place. Which was
Starting fourth in the 25-car field, the short track star from Jamestown, Ind. immediately went high on the quarter-mile track and grabbed this race by the throat. Stanbrough was masterful in negotiating the tricky conditions and built up almost a straightaway advantage over Ballou as he sailed under the white flag.
But a lapped car slid into his path and Stanbrough flipped in Turn 1 to ruin his awesome drive. He stormed away from the accident unhurt but in an understandably bad mood.
Following the red flag, Ballou led the field to the white flag and appeared to be headed for a win before the last-corner drama.
The Chevrolet/Fatheadz sponsored series now moves to Boswell, Ind. on Thursday night with Darland owning a 26-point lead over Levi Jones and 31 over 16-year-old Cole Whitt, who finished second at Kokomo.
