USAC: Fillip Ends Decade-Long Drought at Richmond

It was a victory for the older generation and the little guy here Saturday as 51-year-old Chet Fillip spanked the competition in the 100-lap USAC Silver Crown feature at Richmond Raceway.

Starting 10th in the car built and maintained by Fillip and his brothers, the Texas native stormed past pole-sitter Tracy Hines on Lap 30 and finished a straightaway ahead of runner-up Cameron Dodson.

"I enjoy building things and trying things and today my car was pretty awesome," said Fillip, whose last USAC victory came in a sprint car 10 years ago. "I set it up and built it to have a great side bite and it really came off the corners real good.

"We didn't qualify very good but I was able to pass cars right away and get to the front. It was a pleasant surprise, trust me."

Following Bruan Tyler's accident on Lap 9, the final 80 laps were run under green in the 100-degree temperatures. Mario Andretti was 54 when he captured his last Indy-car win in 1994 and Fillip didn't exactly leap out of the cockpit in victory lane.

"I'm not as young as I was a couple years ago," joked Fillip, who qualified for the Indianapolis 500 in 1982 and 1983. "It was really hot but I'm glad I was out in front, I think that made it easier to be honest.

"I was glad to see that checkered flag, believe me."

Dodson, who resides in Greenfield, Ind., did a marvelous job as he charged from 16th for his best-ever USAC finish and A.J. Fike wound up third. Hines, second in Friday night's USAC sprint show, had to settle for fourth.
