USAC: Tyler Takes Silver Crown At Richmond
Written by: Robin Miller
Richmond, VA

Brian Tyler took advantage of a late yellow and used a nifty move to get by race-long leader Bobby East to capture Saturday's USAC Silver Crown show at Richmond Raceway.

East started from the pole position and was routing his competition, holding more than a straightaway lead over Tyler, when the sway bar came off his Beast/Ford and brought out the caution on Lap 80.

On the Lap 85 restart, Tyler moved his Team 6R Beast/Toyota to the outside of East as they charged into Turn 1 and then dove under him as they swept through Turn 2. He came out low and into the lead he never relinquished.

"I needed that caution because Bobby was gone but I was able to run him into the corner a lot harder than he wanted, and almost harder than I wanted, but then I used a crossover move and got underneath him," said the 40-year-old veteran from Parma, Mich. after scoring his 15th Silver Crown victory.

"I like these 100-lap races because you've got to be patient
and it usually takes me 50 laps to get into a groove and then I go racing."

East was understandably upset since his disappearing sway bar ruined the handling of his car the last 15 laps. "It was terrible," he said.

Cameron Dodson, a 20-year-old from Greenfield, Ind. who was critically injured in a passenger car accident last winter, made an impressive return to USAC by charging from 14th to third in the Carl Edwards Beast/Ford.

"We tested last week at Memphis and I have no lingering effects from that accident," said Dodson. "I just can't thank my team enough, they called while I was in the hospital and told me I had a car when I got healthy.

"I wish we could have started closer to the front because I think maybe I could have won this thing but it was a good day. It's good to be back in these cars."

Bobby Santos won Friday night's USAC sprint race over Darren Hagen and Brad Sweet..
