Dan Wheldon and Tony Cotman share their thoughts about the new 2012 Indy car after it turned its first laps on the Indy oval. (IndyCar Series)
It turned only a handful of laps during a day where dark clouds and rain interrupted the festivities, but Dan Wheldon, Bryan Herta Autosport and the INDYCAR test team made history as the new-for-2012 Dallara-Honda IR12 toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

With two more days of testing planned, the turbocharged V6-powered machine is expected to inch closer to the lap speeds set by the current Dallara Indy car.

"We were messed up a bit by the weather and then just ran through the first items we had on the testing plan for the car's Speedway specification," Wheldon told SPEED.com at the end of the day.

"We followed the lead that [INDYCAR VP of Technology] Will Phillips and [2012 Project Manager] Tony Cotman set out for us, and we would have liked to have done more laps, but we have three days here and will get a lot more done on Wednesday and Thursday, I suspect. I should have a better indication on what the car's like to drive here tomorrow."

Until then, enjoy the first official action video of the 2012 Dallara released by the IZOD IndyCar Series from Tuesday at IMS.
