Hours before Saturday’s opening race of the 2010 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series season, Kasey Kahne Racing driver Cody Darrah was injured in what the team is calling “a minor car accident” in Florida.

Darrah, 20, sustained non-life threatening injuries that will keep him out of action indefinitely.

According to a team member, Darrah was admitted to a Florida hospital so doctors could evaluate the severity of a broken lower leg. One crewman used the word “shattered” to describe the injury.

Sunday, team owner Kasey Kahne stated that he visited his driver at the hospital, and that Darrah will undergo surgery Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina to repair his broken left leg.

“He will be fine,” concluded Kahne, who will continue to field Darrah’s ride on the national tour.

A native of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, Darrah was reportedly travelling in a vehicle with his father when the crash occurred.

KKR teammate Brad Sweet drove Darrah’s number-91 Saturday at Volusia Speedway Park, finishing 14th in the A-feature, which was won by four-time defending champion Donny Schatz. Sweet is also expected to return to the ride Sunday at that same track in Barberville.

Darrah, a viable candidate for the series’ rookie-of-the-year honors, is embarking on his first full-season with the team, which signed him in the off-season after a brief, but productive tour of duty competing for his family-owned team in his home region with the Pennsylvania Posse, widely regarded as the toughest weekly competition in 410 sprint car racing.

The youngster drove to six victories in 2009, including his maiden Outlaws win in the rain-delayed Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway, which was contested in October.

Darrah has 17 career starts with the World of Outlaws with three top-five finishes.
