In a move aimed at improving the on-track product for fans, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is implementing double-file restarts for the 2010 season, which gets underway next week at the Florida DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.

While an official announcement is expected Friday, SPEED has learned that teams have already been notified of that and several other procedural changes with the organization’s racing program.

In previous seasons, cars lined up single-file for restarts, and passing before the start/finish line was prohibited, with cars having to remain to the outside of an orange cone until taking the green flag.

Now, competitors will line-up side-by-side the same as they do at the initial start of an event, with the leader getting the choice of lanes. As is currently the case, a chalk line in turn four will denote the point at which drivers may begin racing.

However, Outlaws officials will reserve the right to revert to single-file restarts as necessary to maintain a safe environment for participants.

Another change eliminates the “pill draw” to determine the lineup in the Dash, an event held after the heat races, which establishes the top 10 starting positions for the A-Feature. Going forward, drivers will be positioned based on their qualifying times. In addition, the non-qualifiers race has been eliminated from the program.

Teams that ran full-time with the Outlaws in 2009 are being rewarded with guaranteed starting positions in each of the three features scheduled at Volusia. Those provisionals will not count against teams for the balance of the season.

Those tweaks come in the wake of last October’s announcement that Goodyear is replacing Hoosier as the official tire of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series for at least the next several years.
